Candle lit dinner, lased with sampling of grapes and freshly squeezed cocktails accompanied by small packages of Cinnamon and strawberry Cookies with chocolates and red roses on the side for every individual and couple who walked into the Desmond Tutu Center on 14th Feb, 2020. All this, courtesy of Ability Africa Media (AAM) also known as Ability Africa Magazine which hosts this dinner annually not only to celebrate disability, but also to appreciate its readers from across Kenya and Africa. This year’s theme was centered around Disability and love; with special focus on self love, romantic relationships and intimacy between the able bodied and disabled community.
Love and romance was definitely in the air and the atmosphere was full of anticipation. You could almost tell someone was going to propose to someone or singles would come out of there coupled…you know? The red, white drapes and decor could not go without notice once you got into the venue and come they did; from one couple to another. Every individual and couple was given a care package each a surprise from the next to keep people guessing.
Music was in plenty from all related genres done by the Mbugua sisters; Cate & Nancy accompanied by Tugizo who performed exceptionally throughout the show.
Program ran smoothly from beginning to end with a word of prayer from Pastor Graham
then immediately after the CEO of Ability Africa Media took over; started of by citing the milestones AAM has covered and the thresholds it continues to push through even now as it keeps growing. She took time to recognize Rare Beauty Models who were co sponsors of the event as well, highlighting that it was the first ever modelling agency that took on models with disabilities and trained them to work at per with any and every model in any and all parts of the world.
This event was also graced by representatives of the National Government including Permanent Secretary, Josephat Mukobe whose address was largely based on self love for Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) before they could focus on anything else. Sentiments that were also echoed by Grace Wanjiru-the key note speaker of the event.
